My definition of “conflict” from the top of my head would be, a disagreement between two sides of people. Conflict could be verbal or worse, could be physical. Conflict can be minor, two people with different ideas, or major, which could lead to a physical fight. Example of minor conflict could just be a disagreement in a team, where one team member proposes an idea but another team member doesn’t think it would work. An example of major conflict can be seen very often in a game of ice hockey, or any pretty much most physical sports.
Conflict can be grouped into four types and be pictured as a tree:
· No conflict – every single community in the world would face conflict at a stage and the communities in this category is good at resolving conflict before it develops.
· Surface conflict – This category of conflict can be said as having very shallow or no roots. Conflict my be from some misunderstanding and can generally be solved by communicating and having both sides to understand each others opinions.
· Latent conflict – A conflict below the surface and not brought into the open. Addressing the situation would require the conflict above the surface. (i guess this could be a kind of emotional conflict).
· Open conflict – This is a category which has very visible and deep roots which has been ongoing for along time. Causes and effects need to be known before the situation can be solved.
The stages of conflict begins which a stage called “pre-conflict”, generally just a discussion and communication of their thoughts/ideas. Next is “confrontation” , when neither side would with the opposite sides idea and does not think they are wrong. A “crisis” is followed on when communication between both sides seizes and violence is about to or have erupted. “Outcome”, is the stage where force is the only way to go until one side wins, surrenders, cease-fire is agreed on, r both sides is exhausted and 3rd party halts the violence. “Post conflict” is next when the violence ends. When both sides agree that a solution is need, they are in the “communication channels opened” stage. Next stage is “mutual understanding”, when both sides starts to understand the views of others and begins to respect it. When an approach is found and both groups agree, they have entered the “finding solutions” stage. Lastly, the stage “agreement” is when both sides agree and accepts each others views.
